Briefe ins Gefängnis - An exhibition of Compassion
The touring exhibition, developed and curated by Llot Llov and Riche in co-operation with Turkey Group Berlin of Amnesty International shows an excerpt of 6000 letters and postcards to a Kurd of german citizenship during his incarceration in Turkey. Mehmet Desde, who had flown to Turkey for his father's funeral in 2002, was sentenced to six years in prison for mistaken identity. The letters and cards he received through campaigns of various organizations alleviated his imprisonment significantly. Besides the mental support, which mail to political prisoners entails, those letters and postcards had a direct effect on the way Mehmet got treated in the penitentiary.
This exhibition starts on July, 11th. 2013. It aims to show visitors the multitude of letters to Mehmet Desde and raise awareness for Amnesty International's mail campaigns. "We want to showcase how easy it is to express ones solidarity with political prisoners with just one card or one letter."
The opening event will be accompanied with a panel discussion. The AI-General Secretary
Selmin Caliskan, as well as Misses Sebnem Korur Fincanci (human rights expert of the Türkische Menschenrechtsstiftung - TIHV). They will talk about, how prisoners in Turkey are treated and which procedures, like tantalazation, they are suffering of. Furthermore the lack of turkish justice will be topic and the present situation will be discussed.
