Thinking about a piece of furniture intended for the collection and separation of trash, we first started to research household waste as such. Our intention was, to create an object that people like to use, because it makes itself felt in a room and it is useful and functional. To find out whether and how recycling can be rewarding, we analyzed the nature of the different kinds of waste. Two things were of interest: the volume and how the trash made it from the kitchen to the trashcan/dustbin. Besides the collecting and sorting of waste we were fascinated by the process that domestic waste created in the mind of the consumer.
This process determined our design idea.
People are trapped by trash, they constantly produce it and at the same time have to figure out how to get rid of it. At times the process is dramatic, a beloved object can turn into trash in seconds. Subsequently the useless, disgusting and annoying waste is hidden from sight in containers or bags and banned from our view. Since not all trash is ugly or revolting, we tried to create a system where only the unavoidable is hidden. To raise the consumers consciousness, we bring the trash back into the middle of his life and turn it with our coat rack for trash containers into a piece of furniture, even an object of art.
The stand serves as a recycling and waste station in the kitchen. The four containers can easily be hooked on, taken off or filled. The vertical order of the containers on the stand are space saving. The stand packages and presents in an attractive manner what usually is hidden from sight.
The different containers can either be filled accordingly at the stand or can be placed individually wherever they are needed. All containers can be locked at all times. When all containers are hooked to the stand they form a lively object in the room.
